SHAHR-E REY, Tehran Province -- Police in Tehran have seized 140 kilograms of narcotics from drug traffickers over the past week, a provincial anti-narcotics police official, Qader Karimi, told IRNA on Monday.
"Meanwhile police also arrested six bandits, 48 drug distributors, 215 dealers, 52 smugglers and 177 addicts, which were all handed to judicial authorities," he added.
The haul included 88 kilograms of hashish, 40 kilos of opium and 12 kilograms of heroin, Karimi said, adding that the seizure was made during several police operations.
Iran accounts for 80 percent of the opium and 90 percent of the morphine intercepted in the world, according to the International Narcotics Control Board.
According to latest statistics, Iranian police seized 112 tons of illegal drugs and arrested 306,000 people on drug-related charges in the last Iranian year, which ended March 20, 2002.
